EPT11 Malta: Panka's fold - sick or standard?

EPT11_malta_main_event_final_table_dominik_panka_jean_montury.jpg

Panka and Montury face off in that hand

We've seen some pretty amazing folds at EPT final tables down the years. At the EPT7 PCA final table Galen Hall made a brilliant lay down against Chris Oliver when they were heads up. On a 5♦3♦2♣2♥A♠ board, Hall bet the river and then somehow found a fold with 8♣4♥ when Oliver shoved with A♦2♠.

Earlier today in Dominik Panka submitted his own entry into the "sick folds" category but was it sick or standard? Well who better to ask than the man himself?

Before reading on if you haven't watched the hand yet head here and fast forward to the six hour 23 minute mark.

For those who prefer their hand histories text based this is how the players stacked up for the hand in question. Blinds were 80,000/160,000 ante 20,000.

Button: Valentin Messina, 13,900,000 (87 big blinds)
Small blind: Dominik Panka, 4,655,000 (29 big blinds)
Big blind: Jean Montury, 8,300,000 (52 big blinds)

From the button Messina opened to 325,000, Panka then three-bet to 850,000 with pocket tens, only for Montury to four-bet to 2,085,000. Messina folded and action was now back on Panka. We won't reveal Montury's hand just yet because Panka didn't know what it was at the time either.

EPT11_malta_main_event_final_table_dominik_panka2.jpg

Panka reaches for raising chips

Anyhow, let's allow Panka to tell us what was going through his head during this hand...

"It's a really interesting hand, I pick up tens in the small blind and Valentin opened from the button. He was opening super wide, some hands he folded because I played with Jean blind versus blind many times, but sometimes he opened 7-2 off so his opening range is very wide. So for me it's a great spot to three-bet against him and get it in. But Jean makes a large four-bet and he's playing very snug.

"I'd got a lot of information from my friends watching the feed about the way he plays and the way he was acting during hands as he gives off a decent amount of tells. I'm not an expert with tells but we were pretty quickly able to identify that how he touches and moves his chips depends on the strength of his hand. If he had a decent hand but he wasn't really comfortable with it then he was stroking his chips. But, if he had a good hand he was either shuffling his chips or moving them in a different way. Additionally he was raising smaller with weaker hands. If he had ace-queen or nines here he would probably have raised to around 1,600,000. So, he pretty quickly gave away the strength of his hand. Obviously he can have ace-king there but I was pretty comfortable with this fold. In other circumstances against other players, tens, three handed with 30 big blinds is a premium hand and you get it in.

"I also knew that even though I was quite short I had a decent shot if I doubled up. So I also considered tournament life and the fact that I think I am the most experienced and that Valentin was the tougher opponent and Jean was playing pretty straight forward. This wasn't his first four-bet though, he had four-bet with ace-king, but bigger and quicker. I had a very good read on him and I was pretty comfortable folding tens. I don't think I would've laid queens down, I would never have forgiven myself if he had a worse hand. I would probably have got it in with jacks and ace-king suited. Fortunately I had the tens."

************

Fortunately indeed as Montury had pocket queens and had Panka crushed. So there you have it, tens was the absolute top of the range that Panka would've folded in that spot and it was mostly down to a cluster of live tells. He was comfortable with the fold but does that make it standard? Let us know by contacting us @PokerStarsBlog.

Monster Pot Report: All the week's biggest Play Money hands

Before we get started, a quick hat tip should go to Lucky_Bet888 from Sweden, who entered the fray of the Billionaire Club World Rankings at #1 this week. There were good weeks for the chasing pack as both uhjustmint and Dash_Lane crossed the 18 billion barrier, but both will have to work hard to reel in the leader who has a staggering 33,783,076,952 chips!

Now to business! After the maniacal exploits detailed in last week's Monster Pot Report, things returned to a more steady state of affairs this week.

The winner of the week's most monstrous pot was the reigning PlaySCOOP champion zvjerka1 from the USA. The hand took place at a 6-Max 10M/20M table that was stacked with the nosebleed games' biggest names.

Chris Money800 Moneymaker opened the action under the gun with a minimum raise holding J♦9♠. Three players folded, then viziato1991 (K♥Q♦) and zvjerka1 (8♥8♣) found calls in the blinds. The flop brought 7♠J♣4♦ to put the 2003 WSOP Champion in front.

racks_of_chips_23april15.jpg

zvjerka1 led out on the flop for 60M, Moneymaker called and the dangerous Italian folded. The board quickly rewarded the bettor for his aggression by delivering the 8♠ to make a well disguised set on the turn. zjerka1 led out again, this time for 120M, and Moneymaker found a raise to 260M which was calmly called.

The board now decided to forsake aggression and brought a potentially bankrupting J♥ to boost Moneymaker to a second best three-of-a-kind. Sensing he could extract some additional value, zvjerka1 opted to check - Moneymaker fell into the trap and bet 400M. zvjerka raised it to 1.28B and was then faced with a raise to 2.28B.

At this point greed was put to bed and he made the conservative call (both players still had chips). The cards were turned up and 5.31B chips went to the man with the pocket eights. Even after weeks of vertigo inducing play, the hand was sufficiently massive to register 8th on the all-time list.

The action at 5M/10M was fairly muted, with just a handful of pots big enough for inclusion here. They resulted from a clash in which viziato1991 got the better of compatriot YHD9JU7. The biggest pot in the all-Azzurri match was 1.48B chips.

Stepping down a notch to 2.5M/5M it was the same Italian again claiming the top spot. This time it was a nasty little 'straight Vs straight' encounter with NZEWQER. viziaot1991 flopped a seven-high straight and was lucky enough to be up against a five high straight - resulting in a 2.04B chip pay off.

The 1M/2M games provided a more competitive top-ranked hand, although the winner was another very familiar name. America's Kleppr held K♥K♦ against the A♠K♣ of Cloud_Hsieh and the board delivered an inescapable 5♣J♠K♠7♥5♥. It wasn't all glory and chip-stacking for Kleppr though, as n.leitner@ge the shortstack was all-in holding 5♦5♠ - quads was good for 43 per cent of the pot.

Finally, the king of the hill in the 500K/1M game was kdogg2377, who successfully cracked aces with K♣6♣. A flopped two pair did the trick and was worth a succulent 484M chips. Crisis Calls was the aptly named victim.

Here are the top 10 hands of all time as recorded by the Monster Pot Report:

11/04/2015 14,806,920,000 viziato1991

Enjoy Caribbean Hold’em Inside Las Vegas USA Casino

A very popular table game right now is Texas Hold’em. Las Vegas USA Casino offers a form of this game, which has become highly played online. Caribbean Hold’em is somewhat similar to the real game of Texas Hold’em, but lacks one important feature, other players.

Caribbean Hold’em, online casino game, is only played against the dealer. This may work to some players advantages, but then many play for the interaction with other players. Another major difference is only two wagers are made instead of the possible 4 wagers in the regular game. This also could be both a blessing and a curse this version.

Players can wager between $5.00 and $250.00 per hand. Also players can made a $1.00 wager on the progressive jackpot. This makes the maximum wagers on hand between 16.00 and $751.00 per hand. These limits are a bit higher than in some of the other Real-Time Gaming casinos.

The progressive jackpot is $33,484.85 and can only be won with hitting a Royal Flush on the flop, which means the players two hold cards and the first three cards on the board. Players can also win portions of the progressive jackpot by receiving other choice hands. On the left of the screen is a red tabs, labeled “Rules”. Players can click on this and the winning hands will be listed.

Dispite the fact that this version relies mostly on luck, the game is quite fun and the progressive jackpot hits rather often. So there are two reasons already why you should try Las Vegas USA Casino’s Caribbean Hold’em, today.

APPT9 Seoul Day 2: The bubble bursts

The bubble.

One of the tensest times in any tournament. The moment players aim to hang on through another knockout and see a return on their investment and their hours at the table.

For one though, it's always heartbreak, as they come up just shy of a payday and walk away with empty pockets.

Tonight, deep into Day 2 of the APPT9 Seoul Main Event, the bubble has burst. The 27 remaining players are now all guaranteed KRW5,050,000 ($4,617) for their efforts.

For our bubble boy though, Japan's Hiroyuki Tanaka, he'll have to be content with nothing but the experience. With blinds at 2,000/4,000 and a 500 ante, the action folded around to Tanaka who was seated in the hijack. He moved all in for around 60,000 in chips before Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang, sitting directly to his left, made the call. The button and the blinds tossed their cards in the muck before Tanaka and Huang tabled their cards.

Tanaka: A♥T♦
Huang: A♦K♥

Tanaka was dominated and in rough shape. With the board running out 5♠Q♠4♠3♥6♣ Huang's king-kicker played and Tanaka's hopes of claiming an APPT Main Event title this week were gone.

APPTSeoul2015_MainEvent_Day2_073.jpg

The APPT9 Seoul Main Event bubble boy, Hiroyuki Tanaka

You could feel the tension lift in the room as everybody else locked up a payday and we continued to edge closer to a final table here in Seoul. The High Roller event has also just begun at the adjacent tables of the Paradise Walkerhill Casino poker room. A bunch of rested players have ponied up KRW6,000,000 ($5,485) and taken their seats.

Meanwhile in the Main Event, a new chip leader has emerged. With only 18 left now, it's USA's Jason Mo who has found himself in front after a big clash with fellow countryman Mick Woo. The action began with Woo opening the button for 14,000 before Mo defended his big blind.

The flop landed 2♦Q♦8♣ and when both players checked the dealer turned the A♦. Mo checked again before Woo made a bet of 13,000. Mo administered a check-raise and after Woo studied his opponent he made the call.

The river was the 3♠ and after going into the tank momentarily, Mo continued for 105,500. Woo moved all in over the top for 265,000 to put his opponent to the test. With J♦5♦ for the second nuts Mo made the call and was good against Woo's K♦Q♠. Mo scooped a monster pot of 660,000 in chips, eliminating Woo in 23rd place.

APPTSeoul2015_MainEvent_Day2_090.jpg

New chip leader Jason Mo

With the High Roller side event seeing a lot more entrants than initially anticipated, plans have changed for the Main Event structure. Play will close after 10 levels tonight to accommodate the extra side event players before the Main Event runners return tomorrow to battle it out.

With only 16 players left now and about an hour of play remaining, we'll see if Mo can maintain the chip lead and find out who survives to Day 3 of the APPT Seoul Main Event.

Ho Casino Dynasty Looking To Expand Into Japan

Published on October 29, 2013 by Terry Goodwin

The Ho family has built a casino gambling empire with their innovative thinking and ability to take big chances. Stanley Ho was the pioneer of much of that empire building, and now his son is taking aim at expanding the empire.

Lawrence Ho has announced that if Melco Crown Entertainment gains the right to open a casino in Japan, that the company is prepared to invest $5 billion into the project. Japan has become a hot target for much of the gaming industry over the past couple of years.

Macau has become the top gaming market in the world, and along with Macau's success has come an idea that other countries in Asia could also thrive. Japan is at the top of the economic ladder in the world, making it a desirable destination for gaming companies looking to plant their flag.

Ho's desire to break away from the Macau empire the family created comes from an increased directive from the government to control the gaming industry in Macau. Ho believes the future of the industry may be shifting away from Macau and into areas such as Japan and Singapore.

"There is no doubt that Japan is the biggest prize available to developers in Asia," said analyst William Naymar. "The amount of gamblers that exist in Japan, coupled with a thriving economy, make Japan a natural choice for any gaming group. The first few casinos opened there will change the future of the industry."

Ho's interests do not stop with Japan. In recent years, Ho has invested in casino projects in the Philippines and Russia. It has all been an effort to expand beyond the clutches of the Chinese government and Macau.

"Macau is a small place," said Ho. "As much as I want to build a theme park, we just don't have the land to do it.

Ho went on to say, "We still have the most eggs in the Macau basket."

Eureka5 Rozvadov Day 2: Paleta leads final 28

Day 2 was certainly moving day today on the Eureka Poker Tour. The King's Casino welcomed back 255 players and by the end of nine levels of play, just 28 remained. Lots of big names, Team Pros and a bubble boy made way throughout the day.

Some of them made way so Rastislav Paleta could rise to the summit with an impressive 1,194,000.

eureka5_rozvadov_5_Rastislav_Paleta.jpg .jpg

The man to catch

He heads a top five that looks like:

Rastislav Paleta - 1,194,000
Roman Blaha - 1,070,000
Langar Oghabian - 1,068,000
Marc Radgen - 1,039,000
Raphael Wimmer - 1,003,000

For the Day 3 seat draw and chip counts, click here.

Paleta was cruising along with an average stack until a crazy fives minutes, where he cracked aces twice, and saw him rocket into the lead. Firstly, his pair of kings bettered an opponent's rockets, and then he did the same with K♥Q♥ by hitting running queens on the turn and river.

Paleta predicted he'd make two final tables this week and already has one under his after he made the final five players who made a deal in the 100 Grand Event a a couple of days ago. That earned him more that €10k and he's in great shape to make true on his prediction.

eureka5_rozvadov_Atik_Miah.jpg

Bubble trouble

The bubble burst at the beginning of level 17, just after the players had come back from an American-Italian themed buffet dinner break. Atik Miah may have cracked a few ribs over dinner but it was his resolve that broke once he was back at the table. He got his chips in with ace-jack versus the pocket eights of Adi Alkalay and looked good for a double up when a jack flopped, but an eight on the river sealed his penniless fate.

eureka5_rozvadov_meciar_grafton.jpg

Meciar and Grafton (right)

At least he lasted longer than such luminaries as Sam Grafton, Erich Kollmann, Christian Schwenk, Adam Owen, Jose Quintas, Martin Mulsow, Tobias Peters, and Theodoros Aidonopoulos.

Notables who made the money but failed to progress to Day 3 included: Martin Kabrhel (38th), Team PokerStars Pro Christophe De Meulder (40th), Dag Palovic (43rd), Torsten Pischl (56th), Michal Polchlopek (66th), Petr Jelinek (86th) and defending champion Martin Meciar (90th). For all the payout information so far, click here.

eureka5_rozvadov_chris_de_meulder2.jpg

De Meulder made a deep run

Once again, play will restart at 2pm CET tomorrow where play will continue until at least the official final table of eight has been reached. If the day goes particularly quickly (less than eight levels), a decision may be made to play onto six remaining, to ensure a balanced amount of time is played across the final two days.

For now, have a look at what everyone feasted on this evening at the American-Italian themed buffet!

APPT9 Seoul Day 1B: Women's intuition

There's no denying that poker is a notoriously male-dominated activity. Since the game's rise to popularity, women have always made up a small percentage of player numbers. While men account for the majority of the field here for APPT9 Seoul, there are a few ladies taking charge on the felt.

Of the 66 players remaining here late into Day 1B, nine of those are women, and a few have already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with at the poker table.

Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin is flying the flag for the ladies here today, taking down pots and accumulating chips. With eight APPT cashes last year she has already built herself an impressive resume.

Having earned just shy of half a million dollars in live cashes, Lin's biggest score came in 2012, when she won the Red Dragon Macau Poker Cup for $110,077. With first place for this Main Event paying $151,359.87, we'll see if she can take down her biggest score yet.

APPTSeoul2015_MainEvent_Day1B_028.jpg

China's Sixiao 'Juicy' Li is another lady among the action, already amassing around 70,000 in chips since the day began. Li found a fifth place finish here in Seoul during APPT7 for $33,865 and is well on her way to improving on that result this week.

Yu Kurita from Japan is here too after making a statement late last year with two cashes in the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific Melbourne. The best of which was a fifth place result in the NHLE 6 Max event for $24,275. Kurita has over $125,000 in live earnings and will be looking to add to that here in Seoul.

APPTSeoul2015_MainEvent_Day1B_013.jpg

Yu Kurita at the table today

Manami Hayamizu was another player representing the female contingent but was just eliminated only moments ago. Having made a name for herself after a number of final tables in Macau and two previous APPT Seoul cashes, unfortunately she won't be making another deep run here in this Main Event.

With only one level of play remaining in Day 1B, the eliminations are starting to fly thick and fast. Eight ladies still remain in a field of 57 runners and we'll be watching to see who manages to qualify for Day 2 here at APPT9 Seoul.

Griffin Paul Wins 2015 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown

Griffin Paul has won the 2015 World Poker Tour Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $3,500 buy-in $5 million guaranteed no-limit hold’em main event, topping a field of 1,476 entries to capture the title and a $1,000,000 payday.

The 22-year-old poker pro from Calabasas, California also earned 1,440 Card Player Player of the Year points, moving him into 18th place in the overall POY standings when combined with the 84 points he earned for a third-place finish in a small field $1,100 prelim at the L.A. Poker Classic.

Paul came into the televised final table of six as the chip leader, with his 14.3 million chip stack accounting for approximately a third of chips in play. 2011 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Joe Ebanks came from behind with pocket nines to beat Andre Crooks’ pocket kings in a massive preflop all-in pot to give Ebanks a 3-to-2 chip lead heading into heads-up play.

Paul was able to win a race with AClub SuitJSpade Suit versus Ebanks’ 6Heart Suit6Diamond Suit to regain the lead, and by the 33rd hand of heads up play held a roughly 3.5-to-1 lead over Ebanks. On the final hand of the tournament Paul limped from the button for 400,000 and Ebanks made it 1,500,000 to go with 8,525,000 million behind. Paul called and the flop came down KDiamond SuitJClub Suit4Heart Suit. Ebanks lead for 1 million from out of position and Paul moved all-in. Ebanks called with the ADiamond SuitJHeart Suit only to find that Paul had flopped a higher pair with the KClub Suit9Diamond Suit.

The 4Diamond Suit on the turn and 6Spade Suit on the river improved neither player, securing the pot and the title for Paul while Ebanks was sent to the rail with $615,000 for his second-place showing.

Here’s a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at this final table:

Place Player Earnings (USD) POY Points
1 Griffin Paul $1,000,000 1440
2 Joe Ebanks $615,000 1200
3 Andre Crooks $383,000 960
4 Shawn Nguyen $323,500 720
5 Brian Green $269,000 600
6 Ryan Rivers $217,500 480
