This week's must-have NBA daily fantasy basketball players
In daily fantasy basketball, there’s such a thing as being too good.

Case in point: Stephen Curry.

The Golden State Warriors point guard is far and away the best scorer in the NBA right now, and is seen by the majority of DFS participants as a must-play every time he hits the court. But with the Warriors at 22-0 and enjoying an average margin of victory at nearly 15 points, Curry often finds himself glued to the bench for significant portions of his team’s fourth quarters.

Curry isn’t the only player who deals with this. San Antonio small forward Kawhi Leonard plays on a Spurs team that wins by an average of nearly 12 points per game, resulting in plenty of rest for Leonard - and aggravation for DFS players who select him.

This isn’t to suggest Curry and Leonard are bad picks, but players should always consider the possibility of a blowout, and try to determine whether those players can do enough in limited minutes to return value.

Here are the top elite-level FanDuel plays of the week:

Tuesday - PG Stephen Curry, Warriors (at Pacers)

Here’s an example of a situation where you absolutely must consider using Curry. The game total is the highest of the night, and Golden State comes in as “only” a six-point favorite. If Indiana can find a way to keep things close - and Vegas certainly thinks it will - then Curry should see a higher-than normal amount of minutes. And we all know what Curry can do with 35-40 minutes of court time.

Wednesday - SG James Harden, Rockets (at Wizards)

Harden hasn’t had to worry about finding himself on the bench in the waning moments of his team’s games. The Rockets aren’t blowing anyone out, and probably won’t waltz over the Wizards in Washington. Houston will need the league’s second-leading scorer to do what he does best: fill the stat sheet while playing 40 minutes. Also, Washington has allowed the most points in the Eastern Conference.

Thursday - PG Russell Westbrook, Thunder (vs. Hawks)

Oklahoma City’s dynamic duo is always a solid choice but on a four-game slate, you almost certainly have to roster at least one of Westbrook or Kevin Durant. Westbrook gets the edge here by virtue of what he did against the Hawks last season - averaging 29 points, 12.5 assists and 6.5 rebounds in two meetings. Simply put, he’s a triple-double threat, and that makes him a must-play.

Friday - C Andre Drummond, Pistons (at 76ers)

So much can go wrong when selecting Drummond in this spot. The Pistons may build a 30-point lead and rest him in the fourth quarter. He may get fouled 20 times and miss a boatload of free throws. He could wind up with two quick fouls and head to the bench. But with the 76ers just so terrible, and Drummond just so good, you can’t afford to fade him, especially in tournament play, given his huge upside.

Saturday - PF Blake Griffin, Clippers (at Nets)

The Brooklyn Nets are bad. Not quite Philadelhpia 76ers-level bad, but still bad. And Griffin has made a living off of punishing bad teams, even away from Los Angeles. Griffin has maintained his blistering early-season scoring pace even with Chris Paul missing a handful of games. He should have no trouble scoring 25-plus points in this one and will see plenty of rebounding opportunities, as well.

Sunday - Kyle Lowry, Raptors (vs. 76ers)

While Lowry finds himself in the same boat as Drummond earlier in the week, facing a Philadelphia team that can’t beat anyone other than the Lakers, he should have a great chance of returning big value. The Raptors have struggled to put teams away so far this season, and Lowry contributes in so many DFS categories that his floor is sky-high no matter how many minutes he plays.
