Adrian Mateos has made history, emerging victorious from a total of 564 entries in the European Poker Tour Grand Final €10,600 no-limit hold’em main event and in the process becoming the first Spanish player to ever capture an EPT main event title.
“I’m so proud," Mateos told PokerStars reporters after the win. “I want to thank all the people who supported me. A lot of people contacted me on Twitter and Facebook and I want to thank them. I’m really lucky to win the Grand Final.”
For the win the 20-year-old poker pro from Madrid earned €1,082,000 ($1,211,836 USD) and his second major tournament title, having won the WSOP Europe main event in 2013. His lifetime live tournament earnings now exceed $3.3 million.
In addition to the title and the money Mateos was also awarded 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points. He has now made three POY qualified final tables this year, coming out on top in this event and in a €2,150 six-max prelim at the EPT Deauville festival. As a result he has climbed into fourth place in the overall 2015 Player of the Year standings with 2,376 points and $1,276,805 in year-to-date earnings.
Mateos not only outlasted a huge field in this event, he also had to deal with a number of top competition at the final table including fellow young gun extraordinaire Ole Schemion (6th – €233,500) and 2013 third place finisher of the event Johhny Lodden (4th – €379,000).
In the end in came down to a battle between Mateos and Muhyedine Fares of Senegal. Fares began the heads-up showdown with more than a 2-to-1 chip advantage, but by the time the final hand arose Mateos had turned the tides and taken a gigantic lead. to secure the pot and the title for Mateos. For his runner-up finish Fares earned €679,000 ($760,478 USD) and 1,750 POY points, moving him into 12th place in the POY standings.
