Atlantic City casinos have been waiting for several years for something to come along and turn around the fate of a once proud gaming industry. On Friday, several casinos received that lifeline when the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement gave final approval on waivers allowing casinos to offer online gambling in the state.
The waivers are preliminary in the effort to gain an online gaming license, but they all but assure the casinos involved that the license is forthcoming, and the online gaming can begin. The target date, which was confirmed Friday, is November 26th, perfectly timed to correspond with the Thanksgiving holiday.
"It is likely there will be big numbers posted in the opening week at the online casinos," said analyst Harvey Trandle. "Almost everyone is off from their jobs, and with Thanksgiving, people typically take Friday to unwind after the holiday dinner. So there is plenty of opportunity for gamblers to login and play at the casinos online."
The Tropicana Casino and Resort, Trump Taj Mahal, Golden Nugget Atlantic City, the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, and Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino all were granted the online gaming waivers Friday by the state. Caesars Atlantic City and Bally's Atlantic City were also granted waivers Friday, bringing the total number of casinos authorized to launch online sites in New Jersey to seven.
New Jersey will become the third state to offer online gambling when the casinos are opened later this month. Nevada and Delaware have previously authorized online gambling, with Nevada running several online casinos in beta mode since the summer. By the winter holidays, New Jersey and Nevada are both expected to have fully functioning online casinos for their residents.
