Online poker supporters have been trying for years to get a piece of legislation up for a full vote in the California Assembly. A daily fantasy sports bill that cleared the Assembly on Wednesday took less than six months to receive that kind of consideration.

Assembly members voted 62-1 in favor of the legislation, proposed by state lawmaker Adam Gray, who is also pushing for online poker in the Golden State. His bill now moves onto the Senate for consideration, before possibly landing on the governor’s desk. The measure is called the Internet Fantasy Sports Games Protection Act.

There’s still one caveat: The California Attorney General is currently considering whether DFS is legal under state law. An opinion that the games are illegal would change things. The bill that moved forward this week calls for DFS sites to receive licenses from the state’s Department of Justice, if they’re allowed under existing law.

While the vote was big news for DFS, it’s a reminder of California’s need to regulate online poker before the interest in those games possibly fades.

“The swift passage of a DFS regulatory bill shows that California lawmakers do in fact care about protecting consumers who play games online," the Poker Players Alliance said in a statement. “Therefore, we urge the legislature to immediately move legislation that also protects Californians who want to player poker online through appropriate authorization and regulation. If legislating consumer protections for DFS players is a priority for the legislature, the same should be true for Internet poker players.”
