Doug "WCG|Rider" Polk is without doubt one of the most famous online poker players within the game. For years he's battled on the high-stakes cash games, while also finding time to win a global Series of Poker gold bracelet and win the PokerStars Mountain Series $700 Kilimanjaro for $162,952. However, the only thing missing from his impressive résumé was a "COOP" title.
That all changed this past weekend when he navigated a tricky final table and dispatched Oliver "sk2ll m0dR" Wies in heads-up play to win SCOOP-43-H: $2,100 NL Hold'em [1R1A] for $115,000.
"I've actually never won any COOP before, however the main reason is I never really play them," Polk said while attending Jason Somerville's Run It Up Reno!. "AS A RULE relating to tournament it's one of these grind. Because I USED TO BE playing on Twitch, I got in basically each tournament, grinded them on a daily basis. I USED TO BE just lucky I managed to take one down."
What's more, Polk did it while streaming to thousands of viewers on Twitch!
"People were going nuts," Polk said of his stream. "First off, you must activate subscribers-only chat. It was a very cool final table because at one point with seven people left I USED TO BE the shortest. It was getting ropey on the final table, but once it set out to heads up I ACTUALLY felt I had a very good chance to win because that is the format I play. Everyone was just loving it."
The tournament featured a $250K guarantee, but way to 151 entrants that accounted for 42 rebuys and 57 add-ons, that was doubled as a $500,000 prize pool was distributed to the highest 18 players.
The defending champ, Ankush "pistons87" Mandavia busted in 98th place, while poker pro David "dpeters17" Peters had the unlucky distinction of bubbling the general table in 19th place. From there nine players hit the rail before the overall table of nine was established. Among those to fall were Oliver "ollie p" Price (18th - $10,250), Justin "ZeeJustin" Bonomo (15th - $10,750), Ronny "1-ronnyr3" Kaiser (14th - $10,750), and Darren Elias (13th - $10,750).
Here's how things stacked up originally of the general table:
Pavel "3P3NIPA" Plesuv - 609,105James "Andy McLEOD" Obst - 440,407Doug "WCG|Rider" Polk - 419,274Sergio "zcedrick" Aido - 363,075Miguel "Gandalf MR" Riera - 177,923Justin "birddy420" Ouimette - 175,756Oliver "sk2ll m0dR" Wies - 159,042Alexander "EvnomiYa" Mordvinov - 81,805Sami "lrslzk" Kelopuro - 73,613
In the general hand of the tournament, which happened within the 10,000/20,000/2,500 level, Weis (1,181,344) raised to 50,000 holding the T♠6♣ at the button and Polk (1,318,656) defended the large blind with the J♠7♠. Both players checked the J♣9♥J♥ flop, after which Polk led out for 140,000 at the T♦ turn.
Weis called, the 6♠ completed the board at the river, and Polk bet 525,000. Weis responded by moving all in for 988,844 total, and Polk took to the chat.
"Lol, I'm never good [here] but will still call," he said before doing just that. Polk was wrong as his trips was in reality the most productive hand, which sent Weis to the rail in second place with an $80,000 consolation prize.
"The most notable hand was the overall table of the tournament," explained Polk, who played SCOOP from Vancouver. "I over-bet the river for value and he jammed. I even said it within the chat that I USED TO BE calling but l was never good. Emotionally, I felt I'm never going to win, but luckily for me I DO NOT really use that side of my brain to make decisions. I just go along with a more pure math style. In case you are to over-bet and fold trips to a min-raise, you will get owned. I NEED to offer that guy props, he went for it. It was a sexy crazy hand, but really exciting to win that."
"BOOM, won the 2k cubed," Polk tweeted after the win before staying on his grind while streaming his action from SCOOP-49-H: $21,000 NL Hold'em [Heads-Up, High-Roller], $400K Guaranteed.
"That's not an event I WILL BE ABLE TO skip. I NEED TO play that. I USED TO BE playing the general table while playing the $21k. I USED TO BE like two tabling. I TRULY won both matches. What sucked within the heads up is I needed to play "Donger Kim" within the second round. He's a student of mine, one among my best friends, but luckily I let him know who the coach was."

"I'm going to play the ARIA $300k," Polk said while playing the $125 pot-limit Omaha at RIU Reno. "It's funny, I'm playing this $125 tournament here, and it's my only tournament I'm playing in between. Nice little polarization there. I do like polarizing ranges."
