Poker Hand Matchup: Brian Townsend vs. Timothy Burt

Outcome

Preflop, with the blinds at 2,500 and 5,000 and a 500 ante, Burt raised to 10,000 from the button, Townsend went all-in from the small blind, and Burt called and was all-in.

Analysis

Just a couple of seats off the bubble, Townsend threatened the tournament lifetime of his shorter stacked opponent. Townsend was hammering down an overly wide selection of a player opening the button with a min-raise right down to the very narrow range of somebody who was willing to name off 34 big blinds just an orbit or two from a $18,406 min-cash. Normally you wouldn't find Townsend shipping almost 35 big blinds in preflop with QJ – but this was a classic bubble play at work. Despite his monster, Burt tanked for awhile, probably since A-X beats pocket Kings an unacceptable amount of time, and he could easily fold his solution to no less than $18,406. Thankfully Burt eventually realized he couldn't live with himself if he folded Kings on this spot, but he did tank until the clock was called on him – even if they were still a couple of bustouts clear of hand for hand play. Burt picked up a small sweat as Townsend paired his Jack at the turn, but in fact the Queens weren't a viable out for Townsend as Burt had that two pair combination already counterfeited with the running ducks at the flop. Burt faded the Jack, doubled up, and later busted in 537th for $22,678. Townsend’s run finished in 170th, for $44,728.
