New Jersey residents are no strangers to gambling. They have one of the most lucrative land-based casino industries in the US, but that did not stop lawmakers from expanding gambling last year to include online casinos, a move that is expected to bring in millions in tax revenue.
While the AC casinos running the online sites and the state figure out how to divide up the revenue, gamblers are salivating at the idea of logging into a casino from their home computers, and playing for real money. Online gambling begins officially in New Jersey on Tuesday.
"I've been waiting for my whole life to see this happen," said New Jersey resident Stan Rickard. "All there has been up until now is talk amongst lawmakers, but Tuesday will mark the day action was taken."
Rickard said he plans on being one of the first people to login and play for real money. While the new law was enacted to help free online poker restrictions, it is the slot machines that most gamblers are looking forward to playing.
"Getting online to play poker was never much of a challenge," Said Henry Thomas. "But I would like to see how the actual casinos are laid out online. It's going to be a fun day for everyone that has been fighting for Internet gambling regulations."
Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson has launched his own personal attack on Internet gambling this past week. Adelson believes the activity should be banned on a federal level, something that New Jersey has no interest in doing.
"We've all been waiting a long time for this," said Brandon Glass, an avid poker player. "It's almost surreal that the day has finally come when I can sit down in my living room and place bets from a computer. I just can't wait until I get back live in an online poker room."
Atlantic City casinos are hoping to gain the revenue benefits from poker players eager to return to the virtual tables. It is expected that hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue will be generated for New Jersey.
